What the French Academy did today:
Wow, we’ve already reached Week 3 of classes! The kids had an amazing weekend filled with loads of activities. On Saturday, the students participated in Field Day at Saint Michael’s College. The French Academy won the dance competition! You can find a video of their choreography here! Other activities included a water balloon toss, soccer, tug-of-war, an art competition, ping pong, and dodgeball. The French Academy tied for third place! On Sunday, the students were visited by a dance group from Quebec and spent the afternoon learning some new moves. Today, students are back in classes but will be going on field trips to Cafe Provence on Tuesday and Wednesday. They’ll have the choice between indulging in chicken nicoise, beef bourguignon, or vegetarian quiche. This trip has been a favorite for past academies, so the students are really looking forward to it!
In Level 1 classes, students are learning to name and recognize some parts of the body. They’re also learning how to give simple physical descriptions of people. At meal times, these students are engaging in full-blown conversations -- albeit full of gestures, laughter, and guesswork as they immerse themselves in the French language.
Level 2 classes are discussing sports, hobbies, and events. Today, they learned how to participate in and talk about sporting events by asking and answering questions about game rules, scores, player positions, etc. Tomorrow, they’ll be learning how to write basic instructions on how to plan an outing with friends.
In Level 3 classrooms, students are focusing on travel and tourism. They can now ask for and provide descriptions of places they know and places they’d like to visit. Tomorrow, they’ll learn how to read and understand basic information in travel brochures and travel websites about a target city.
Level 4 classes are extensively studying culture this week. Today, they learned about how studying traditions, customs, and history can help people adapt to cultural differences in Francophone countries. Tomorrow, they’ll be learning about and describing the most important cultural celebrations in the Francophone world!
