Selecting your digital language course and getting started with the Middlebury Interactive world language curriculum.
Middlebury Interactive’s digital language courses can be purchased by parents and homeschool families in our online store. We offer courses in Spanish, French, Chinese and German for grades K-12. Our courses are semester-based and include two semesters of content per course. Each semester consists of 18 weeks (nine units) of content. K-2 courses consist of six units per semester. Pacing and completion will depend upon your student’s objectives.
Here are some guidelines for choosing your course and getting started with Middlebury Interactive.
Step 1: Select Your Grade Level
Our courses are designed at grade level and feature relevant, age-appropriate materials that engage students in their learning. Four grade level options include K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Choose the grade level that corresponds to the grade in which your student is currently, or will be, enrolled. If your student has completed all of the available language levels within the appropriate grade level, you may choose to move ahead to the next grade level and complete the course at a lower pace.
Step 2: Select Your Language Level
Elementary School Courses
For elementary students in kindergarten through second grade, we offer a level one introductory course in Spanish, French and Chinese. The K-2 courses are designed specifically for younger students and focus principally on vocabulary acquisition through stories, games, songs and practice activities.
Third grade through fifth grade students have two language levels available: level one and level two. Level one provides a fun, interactive experience for your student’s first exposure to the language. In level two, students continue their language-learning adventure during their second year. Choose level two for your student if they have already completed an elementary level one course, or an equivalent.
Middle School Courses
Middle school students can choose between level one and level one language courses. Middle school level one is an introductory course structured around the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Level two courses are for students who have already completed level one (or an equivalent) and wish to continue their language learning.
High School Courses
High school students can choose to follow one of two different tracks—our traditional high school language courses or our high school “Fluency” courses.
Our traditional high school language courses focus on the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are introduced to vocabulary themes, grammar concepts, sentence structure and culture through explicit instruction and guided, self-paced learning.
Our fluency high school language courses offer more of a language immersion experience. Application of language skills is practiced through observation and intuition, rather than explicit instruction. Authentic materials and task-based projects expose students to language and culture in a contextual, engaging way.
Advanced Placement® courses, offered in Spanish and French, are conducted almost exclusively in the target language and are comparable to third-year college level. Students must have successfully completed High School III in order to enroll in our AP® Spanish and French language courses.
Note that students who have successfully completed the Middlebury versions Middle School 1 and 2 can begin enrollment at High School II level.
Step 3: Teacher Support vs. Independent Study
You have the option to enroll in our digital language course with or without online teacher support.
Middlebury Interactive online teachers serve a similar role as typical classroom teachers, guiding students in their language learning and providing personalized feedback on speaking and writing assignments. Middlebury Interactive's teachers are state-certified, highly proficient second-language instructors.
Our teachers facilitate weekly live sessions via an online meeting tool to provide speaking practice and help reinforce, complement or extend online course content. Activities in live sessions build cultural awareness and stimulate continued interest in world language studies. Session calendars are published each semester and links to the calendars are provided to students within the online class announcements.
Teachers maintain regular communication throughout the duration of the course:
- Teachers establish student contact early on in the course to engage them and provide guidance.
- Teacher contact information, a link to the Student Handbook and a welcome announcement are posted in every course.
- Teachers post weekly announcements related to course activities, calendar and progress.
- Teachers maintain regular communication through in-course messaging, email or phone. All correspondence is timely and answered within 24 business hours (Monday-Friday).
- Meaningful graded feedback on writing and speaking assignments is provided within 72 business hours of submission (Monday-Friday).
- Full grade report is provided with successful completion of the course.
You may choose to enroll in our language courses without teacher support, if you have access to your own teacher or wish to complete the course on your own. Our online language courses have many task-based activities that give students instant feedback. However, the writing and speaking assignments in the courses are not automatically graded. If you would like all activities within the course to be graded, we would advise you to purchase the course with Middlebury Interactive teacher support included. Teacher support is not recommended for grades K-5.
If you are unsure about how to select the right course or whether or not teacher support is the right option for you, please contact our Customer Service at 1-800-596-0910, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. EST. We’d be happy to help you with any questions or technical issues you may have!
Online orders will be processed within 48 business hours. Once the order is processed and your enrollment is complete, you will receive a welcome letter via email that includes a student guide and log-in credentials to access your language course.
After enrolling, if you feel that it's necessary to make adjustments to the language or level, or to cancel your course and receive a full refund, you have 30 days from the date of the purchase to do so. Access to your course will expire one year from the purchase date.
