In today's increasingly global marketplace, students must be equipped with 21st Century skills. This means providing a world-class education that creates well-rounded, responsible citizens who are proficient in more than one language. In a world where nations and peoples are ever more connected, speaking other languages and understanding other cultures has never been more critical. Middlebury Interactive offers a broad portfolio of high school courses and languages to meet the needs of schools and districts, and prepare students for college and career success.
Middlebury Interactive offers two types of language courses, Competency and Fluency, to align with district or school program goals and meet the varied needs of high school students. Both programs focus on developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in an interactive, engaging environment that will immerse and inspire students. The course type for each district or school depends on the objectives of its world language program. Our team of experts will assist in determining which course is the best world language solution for your district or school.
Fluency courses are based on Middlebury College's immersion methodology. Application of language skills is practiced through observation and intuition within a context, task-based activity or real-life theme. Students develop proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through media-rich activities and videos shot on location around the globe. This authentic content allows students to negotiate pathways for meaning. Intended outcomes include the ability to express spontaneous thoughts and ideas in language, build metacognitive skills and acquire a deeper understanding of other cultures. Fluency courses are structured to allow for a customizable learning experience that can meet the needs for a fully online, blended or traditional classroom implementation.
High school Competency courses are grounded in the development and integration of the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are introduced to vocabulary themes, grammar concepts, sentence structure and culture through explicit instruction, guided learning and adaptive pacing. Opportunities to apply language in common situations along with highly interactive activities are designed to reinforce skills in differing contexts and build foundational language knowledge. The use of authentic materials helps build student confidence and comfort in the target language. A full year of Competency courses consists of 36 units with five lessons in each unit.
Advanced Placement® courses, offered in Spanish and French, allow students to expand their cognitive, analytical and communicative skills. The courses are based on the six themes required by the College Board and cover the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational. Conducted almost exclusively in the target language, the courses are comparable to third-year college and university levels. Middlebury Interactive also offers students a supplemental AP® French Exam Review-an online, independent study resource that prepares students for AP® French Language & Culture exam—it includes practice exams, grammar explanations and vocabulary review.
