Middlebury Interactive Languages’ VT Initiative to Reach Up to 10,000 Students at 26 Schools

Partnership with Middlebury College delivers affordable, top-quality language education to Vermont students

June 20, 2013, Middlebury, VT – The Vermont World Language Initiative (VWLI), an innovative partnership between Middlebury Interactive Languages and Middlebury College, next fall will begin providing cost-effective, high-quality world language courses to 26 Vermont schools with a combined enrollment of more than 10,000 students.

“We’ve been delighted with the response from Vermont’s students, teachers and school leaders,” said Middlebury Interactive Languages CEO Jane Swift.  “This initiative levels the playing field to provide more Vermont students with access to top world language education and better prepares them for college and career success.”

The successful first year enrollment was announced during a training session in Middlebury for dozens of Vermont world language teachers.  The VWLI provides participating public or private secondary schools (list attached) with deeply discounted, unlimited access to Middlebury Interactive’s web-based world language courses in Chinese, French, German, Latin and Spanish for only $6000 per year.  Middlebury Interactive is granting participating Vermont schools with deep discounts to access these courses.  In addition, Middlebury College is providing $3,000 for course content and $2,750 for on-site teacher professional development training for each participating school on an annual basis.

“We are very pleased to help Vermont students and teachers access the latest educational tools and training,” said Middlebury College Vice President for Finance Patrick Norton.

Swift noted that the company plans to expand the program to reach more Vermont schools and students in future years.  The VWLI was announced in January at Middlebury Interactive’s new headquarters grand opening, which was attended by Governor Peter Shumlin, Middlebury College President Ronald Liebowitz and other political, education and business leaders.
